What if I can't make every swim practice this summer?  We might be on vacation for a week (or two) or go to a day camp.  Is that okay?

Yes!  It's summer and we know that summer is full of lots of plans and activities and a chance to squeeze in things that we don't get to do all year.  For the weeks that your swimmer might be at camp, we offer evening make up practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30pm-8:30pm. We still encourage swimmers to come to as many morning practices as they can attend, but the evening practices are there for when swimmers need them. If your swimmer cannot attend practice for any reason during the season, there is no need to notify the coaching staff.

What if I need to be late to practice?

To ensure that none of our swimmers get hurt, we ask that if you will be later than 15-20 minutes late to practice that your swimmer skip practice that day; the beginning of practice is an important time for your swimmer to warm up and if they show up at practice in the middle of drills, your swimmer may get hurt.

Is it okay if we miss a pre-team practice?

Yes!  The pre-team program is 5 weeks to offer the greatest opportunity for swimmer growth.  Being in the water 4 days a week for 5 weeks really allows swimmer to see and feel their improvement. With a camp or a vacation, swimmers might miss some practices, but still have a lot of time to practice and grow.  We do not offer evening or make up practice for pre-team.

How will I know what practice group my child is in?

Great question!  Hurricane practice groups are divided by age and ability.  Our coaches take their time to make sure each swimmer is grouped in the best lane to optimize their growth and experience!  Generally, our youngest and most novice swimmers practice at the latest time - 10:15am-11:00am.  Our more experienced and upper elementary and middle school swimmers practice from 9:15am-10:15am.  Our earliest practice time, 8:00am-9:15am is for our oldest and most advanced swimmers.  In addition to groupings by time, our coaches further group swimmers by different lanes.  A swimmer may be invited or encouraged to move practice groups by our coaches. Swimmer category is determined after the first week of practice.

To determine which practice group your swimmer is in:

Log in to your account on team unify: https://www.teamunify.com/Home.jsp?_tabid_=0&team=recfschh

On the left hand side, click “My Account.” Then click “My Account” underneath that. In the middle of the screen, click Members. Double click on the photo/image next to your child’s name. On the details tab under Member Settings, under the Roster you will see your child’s category.

For some reason I'm having a hard time registering, please help!

Let's get that figured out quickly!  We are finding two primary issues with registration this year that we hope to correct with a website upgrade for the 2023 season.  The first issue seems to be in trying to register from a phone or tablet.  If you have attempted to register from one of these devices, please try again from a computer.  We find that this solves most issues.  The second issue is that upon logging in the system sends you to "sports engine" and prompts another login.  Please login again here and that should take you directly to our registration.  If neither of these solutions solve the problem, please contact us via the website and we will respond to you as soon as we can.

How do I commit to a swim meet?

Committing your child to a swim meet is like giving your RSVP to a party:  whether you can attend or not, we need to hear from you! Please commit your swimmer via our website following these directions:

1) Sign into the team website and click on "Team Events" on the right hand side.

 2) Underneath the first meet titled CH vs Holly Hills and Braddock Heights (or any other meet moving forward), click the button that says “Attend/Decline” or “Edit Commitment.”

3) Scroll down to your swimmer’s name and click on it.  This will produce a declaration drop down menu.  You will either select “yes” or “no.”  At this point you can also add any notes you want to share with Coach Julie (i.e. needing to leave early, arriving late, a specific event your child wants to swim or not swim, etc.).  Then click “save changes“ on the bottom right.  Follow these directions to declare for every posted meet.

How do I commit to my volunteering for the meet?

  • Click on the Team Events Tab
  • Next to the desired event, click the Job Signup button. Next to the job you want, check the box(es) by the day/time slot(s) you commit to working.
  • Click the Signup button. In the Optional Contact Info field, you can fill in your phone number, or the contact information of someone else if they will work the job instead.
  • Click Sign Up to finish.

What does my swimmer need for a successful practice?

We want every practice to feel successful for every swimmer.  Help start your swimmer off on the right foot by making sure they have goggles, an appropriate swim suit, a towel, a hair tie/swim cap, and a water bottle.  Appropriate swim suits are one piece suits for girls (we do lots of diving!) and, ideally, a jammer or speedo for boys. In addition, a respectful attitude and listening ears go along way in helping hear and implement instructions coaches are providing.  Lastly, it is absolutely imperative that swimmers listen to their coach's directions so that we can ensure all swimmers' safety in the water.

What happens if it's inclement weather?

Our practice weather policy for the 2022 summer season is:

-In the event of rain, practice WILL continue.

-In the event of thunder or lightning, we must clear the pool.

Please make sure you check your email prior to leaving for practice for possible cancellations. Assume there is practice unless you receive an email.

How will I know what events my swimmer is swimming?

The Head Coach will send out a heat sheet the night before the event which will include a complete list of the events for the meet. There are event numbers, different heats to separate the swimmers by pace, and different lanes. To help your swimmer know when they need to be lining up, it's helpful to "mark their arm" with a permanent marker the morning of the meet. Instructions on how to do so can be found here:

Is my swimmer allowed to attend both morning and evening practices?

Evening practices are for make-ups only. Swimmers can only attend an evening practice if they are missing a morning practice that week.

How can I find individual and team results from our meets?

Please use this link:  https://sites.google.com/view/fssl/      to find results from previous meets.  This link is live under our links page.

Does my swimmer need to qualify for Divisionals?

No, however, in order to earn points for the team you ust swim in two dual/regular season meets. If your swimmer has not swam in at least two dual meets, he/she can still attend Divisionals as an exhibition swimmer (his/her time will not earn the team points). If you have a question about your swimmer, please contact the head coach or board chair.

Does my swimmer need to qualify for the All Stars Meet?

Yes. There is typically a small fee for each event your swimmer plans to compete in that will be due to the team treasurer prior to the All Stars Meet.
